Q: What is wireless internet and how does it work?

A: It is a relatively new broadband computer communication technology allowing you to connect to the Internet.
It transmits and receives data using microwave frequencies.
It doesn’t need a phone line and therefore gives you the freedom of mobility to use the internet any where any time, as long as you are within the coverage area.
It is many times faster and much more stable than a dialup connection.
It is an always on 24/7 connection to the Internet at a fixed rate per month.

Q: Why should I consider wireless Internet?

A: You don’t have to wait for ADSL to be installed.
You may not be able to get ADSL where you are.
We can get you connected and up and running in one day.
The only requirement is that you must be within the coverage area.

Q: What services do you offer?

We offer prepaid and postpaid services.
Prepaid services make use of hotspot technology using the 2.4GHz frequency band
Postpaid services make use of dedicated links using the 5GHz frequency band.

Q: Do I really require line of sight to an access point?

A: Our technology requires clear line of sight. Trees and buildings are considered obstacles in wireless terms. However, if you are very close to one of our access points or hotspots, or if you are in an area where there is very little interference, we would consider an installation. In these cases we can’t guarantee Quality Of Service

Q: What about trees?

A: When it comes to signal degradation, trees are comparable to lead sheets.

Q: What factors determine the speed of my wireless Internet connection?

A: Signal strength and signal quality: Information is transported in packets between the access point and your computer. After each packet is received, an error check is done. If the packet was corrupted, the information is resent. This will obviously decrease your speed. Information packet corruption is caused by poor signal and / or signal distortion.

High surrounding buildings and very dense trees: Due to the high frequencies used by wireless internet systems the penetration level is relatively low. This becomes more and more apparent the further you move away from the access point as the signal strength fades away. Therefore surrounding buildings and dense trees have a huge effect on the signal. Fortunately this problem can easily be solved with a large antenna on a mast.

Line of sight: These high frequencies are also very directional and do not follow the curvature of earth. This problem can be solved by mounting the antenna as high as possible, but this obviously has its limitations. If you are located behind a hill with respect to the access point and you fall in the shadow of the signal, we will not be able to offer you service. This underlines the importance of a site survey. You may well be within range of the access point, but unable to pickup a signal and so save yourself from a costly mistake.

Q: What can I do to increase the speed of my connection?

A: Get an appropriate antenna installed.
Switch your web browser to Firefox.
Install a download manager program that will allow you to make multiple connections to the same server. It is ideal for downloading big files like music from the internet.
Upgrade your subscription contract.
